This is the story of a silly girl, who hasn’t been approachable since she was spayed several years ago. She’s a slinky streak around the house, and never steps a paw outside.
Sammy was born inside to a mother who was also hard to catch, thus why her mom ended up with a few litters of kittens. This was one of four from this litter, three of which we still have, Sammy being one of them. The mom disappeared years ago, not long after this litter of kittens were all fixed. Two of Sammy’s brothers remain - Georgie and Rowdy - who’s stories will come soon.
I call Sammy part ghost because she just appears and disappears, often in untouchable places. She is rarely seen even close to the other cats, although I’ve caught her playing with and sleeping next to Lucky and Salem. Most recently she’s been opening a door to let the rest of the kittens escape, playing chase and shooting off when you go running to catch the escapees.
As far as the humans go, we’ve been playing a game of “You can pet me, if you can reach me", which I normally cannot!
Once in a great while, though, she will allow a few pets. Just a few, though! Then she’s back to a hiding spot. Try to reach for her, and she’ll disappear into the corners of the house. Under a chair, table, or just a furry streak and she’s gone somewhere.
Sammy unfortunately wasn’t vaccinated during our big vet visit back in November. She is very skittish, so picking her up for an exam was not an option. Plus, we couldn’t even find her!
Since she doesn’t go outside and doesn’t interact with other cats, it’s not a huge concern. The vets weren’t too concerned about it, either, since who she does interact with in the house is vaccinated. Honestly, we’re just glad we managed to get her spayed when she was a kitten!
She’s one of those cats we admire from a far, and are still entertained by her antics, even though she’s not a cuddly fur-ball like the kittens. We love her just the same. Plus being given the chance to pet her is an extra special reward.
This publication is free, but you can support our efforts with a one time donation at Ko-Fi. We’re focused on getting the girls spayed first, and all our catch-able cats have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. Several are also available for adoption; please reach out if you’re in the Central Iowa area! Otherwise, please pass this publication along to your feline-loving friends…
