This story is all about the newest void cat on the property - Salem!
Also known as Lucky’s brother, this special guy moved himself right into the house with her. I already had my eye on him, being the only black cat among all the new kittens. Their mother (a cat we named Pocono because of her black nose) came from across the street where they were evicted by new owners. Her and two others (another mother cat and a tom) made their way across. A few months later, she had five kittens.
When we discovered Lucky, we brought her right in. It wasn’t long before she was missing her brothers, so we began to let them in during the day to play. But one night when all the rest went back to the garage, he stayed sleeping in a box on the porch undetected. From that night on, he stayed inside with her.
What makes Salem unique (other than being a protective big brother) is his lack of meow. I jokingly refer to him as using echolocation, as he’ll make a sound that is more of a vibration than a cry. It’s like a grunt and a purr combined. A ‘chirp’, some might call it. He does this when you say his name or call for him, or when he’s greeting you.
Now as sweet as this boy is, we have to watch that he doesn’t upset The Familiar. He’s been trying to worm his way into her heart, but being an older cat, she’s not easily convinced, nor does she want to share her human. Still he tries, occasionally jumping up into our bed, where Serenity is less bothered by his shenanigans than Boo. He’s still learning to keep his distance, but who knows? He might befriend our feisty female familiar when I’m not looking.
Salem, along with Lucky, will be the first two going to the vet to be fixed. Their visit date is January 30th, 2026. (See my Ko-Fi page for how to help with this visit, or other ways you can help below!)
